Since January, the ALAIS family – students, parents, and teacher – have gained first-hand experience of the challenges caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Parents and students have experienced the difficulties of quarantine, isolation, and virus prevention. They have witnessed the difficulties and hardships of doctors and nurses throughout China treating COVID-19 patients with little protective gear, many of whom later became infected and even died from the virus.
“ALAIS understands one its main purposes beyond providing a strong college prep curriculum is to educate our students to be global citizens with a sense of a responsibility help all in need in communities around the world,” Josh Holt, Head of School, explained.
As COVID-19 spread throughout the world, the ALAIS family extended its generosity, empathy, and resources to support the doctors and nurses around the world by any means necessary. Within 48 hours of starting the fundraiser among parents and teachers, the PTO collected almost 40,000RMB, donated by students, teachers, and school leaders.
United to support the world and its fight against COVID-19, parents worked with connections and personal resources to order wholesale medical quality 3M masks for doctors and nurses in the US. The parents chose to support medical works in the US because, “Our kids are studying in an American school, so parents feel more connected to the U.S emotionally,” the mother of Denise (Grade 11) said. Having just fought COVID-19 in China and inspired by the Confucian tradition, she continued, “everyone on this planet should unite as one to fight. Cherish the safe life we have and be grateful and helpful to those who are fighting for us.”
The organization the parents selected to work with is managed by Xue Jing, a Chinese-American living in Florida, who understands her responsibility as an American citizen with Chinese heritage, to use her resources across the country and in China to support American doctors and nurses fighting the virus in the US. “This is a global crisis. No one, no race, no country can be immured from this. It is a war between human beings and COVID-19. We are all in this together. One world.”
So, Xue Jing started a “Help U.S. Hospitals” WeChat group in early March, “for the purpose of connecting hospitals and donating individuals/organizations across the nation, with PPE suppliers in China.” Working with her friend who is a doctor, she identified the Memorial Health system in south Florida as a medical system in dire need of PPEs.
She described her work with ALAIS：“My incredible journey with the 40 families of ALAIS started on 3/28. My friend shaojing Xu, who works with me on the face mask donation effort, called me on that day and shared with me some exciting news. Her high school friend, along with a group of parents of American Lee Academy in Shanghai, was organizing a large-scale face mask donation to support hospitals in U.S. I was then introduced to Mrs. Wenjing Huang and she later invited me to join her donation working group. I shared with the group the desperate need for masks from our local hospitals, the purpose and goal of my organization, the hospitals we selected to support, and our execution plan. The ALAIS donation working group amazed me by working around the clock to collect money, purchase best quality face masks, and deliver to me in an incredibly timely fashion. Their compassion and unconditional love crossed the ocean and reached the southeast end of the U.S.A. We received around 2,000 N95s from ALAIS, the largest donation of N95s we ever received. These invaluable N95s were donated to over 10 hospitals in South Florida and help protect hundreds of ER and ICU doctors and nurses. Dr. Kevin Yungman, the ER doctor from Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston is one of the many who received this generous gift from the other end of the earth. He said, “ You all are angels to us. We are forever grateful for your generosity and love.”
